Discovering the Strands of Music

Most of my posts are cover songs, with the occasional exception.

Posts tagged #Extra Thread are posts which include various ways some songs are connected.

Oh, and I'm from Toronto. I love this city. If you search #toronto, you'll find a plethora of Toronto talent!

I'm mostly into soul, r&b, hip-hop, and reggae. But, I do enjoy the occasional pop, rock, and bossa nova track!

  • Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Everlea, and Maggie Eckford use “Maps”

Remember when Rock Band was THE SHIT?!  I say that like it was so long ago.  It was really only two years ago you couldn’t go to a house jam without it being the life of the party.  I remember I used to gloat my rock band skills to girls thinking it made me look like some sort of superstar.  I would say, “yeah…  I average about 96% on expert…  no big deal…”  That line never worked.

Which brings me to this cover of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps” by Justin from Everlea and Maggie Eckford.  I love how Maggie raises her pitch in the chorus.  It really gives the song a unique twist.  The guy’s voice is okay.  It’s a little too feminine for my liking.  This cover would have been better if it was only her singing.

Shout out to Tricia for the find!  Welcome back!

  • Matisse & The Playground, J*Davey and Nirvana “Smell Like Teen Spirit”

I remember when Shuffle Parties in Toronto were the bomb-diggity!  I swear we’d go every month before it got too well known and too packed.  Before that happened, they used to have live sets of cover songs that really blew you away.  One that stood out to me, was Matisse & The Playground’s cover of Nirvana’s “Smells like Teen Spirit”.  It’s mostly an instrumental cover, but the vocals in the background really do the song justice.

Another cover that was just recently given to me, was J*Davey’s.  Now, THIS is a really dope track!  There’s something about women covering men’s songs that get to me.  I guess hearing a feminine take on it makes it sound different, but in some cases better.

  • “Don’t Speak” when Leela James and No Doubt are on the mic!

    This girl is fly!

Remember when No Doubt was running the airwaves in the ‘90’s?  With winter being upon us, I thought I’d heat things up with a pretty good cover of No Doubt’s classics, “Don’t Speak”.  Gwen Stefani was so fly, what happened?  Apparently she’s 41 years old.  Still, she looks pretty good for her age.

  • Do you want Bauchklang “With or Without You”?

I first heard about this Austrian beatboxing group in college by a friend who’s on TV right now.  It’s amazing how their mouths can mimic each individual sound with such intense detail.  Oh and Ross cheated on Rachelle to this song…  Just sayin’…

  • John Mayer and Jess Delgado ask, “Why Georgia?”

I fell in love with Jess Delgado.  Not only is she cute as hell, but her feminine, yet raspy voice just melts your heart.  her cover of John Mayer’s “Why Georgia?” is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.  No homo.  Everytime I watch this video I feel like I’m a better person somehow.

  • The Killers and Noisettes wanted to know you “When you were Young”

The Killers aren’t exactly my favourite band of all time, but I love their song, “When you were Young”.  I liked this song even more when I heard The Noisettes version of the track.  This was taken from BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge which often brings in artists to cover various popular songs.  check it out.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/livelounge/

  • The XX are ‘Hot like Fire’

I thought I’d pop my blog cherry with this dope cover of Aaliyah’s “Hot Like Fire”.  The XX are a rock band from London, England and they give us a more alternative feel of Aaliyah’s classic track.
