Discovering the Strands of Music

Most of my posts are cover songs, with the occasional exception.

Posts tagged #Extra Thread are posts which include various ways some songs are connected.

Oh, and I'm from Toronto. I love this city. If you search #toronto, you'll find a plethora of Toronto talent!

I'm mostly into soul, r&b, hip-hop, and reggae. But, I do enjoy the occasional pop, rock, and bossa nova track!

  • Raphael Saadiq and The Spinners think “It’s a Shame”

Raphael Saadiq is a prime example of what real, soul music is all about.  He can do it all.  He can sing, write, and produce.  He won a Grammy for his work on Erykah Badu’s hit “Love of my Life (Ode to Hip-hop)”, and got nominated for other various works, such as D’Angelo’s “Untitled”.

I love his rendition of The Spinners’ “It’s A Shame”.  It sounds very similar, but you can definitely hear Saadiq’s distinct voice.

  • Erykah Badu and The Mary Jane Girls can do it “All Night Long” (So can Mary J. Blige)

I can’t believe Erykah Badu is 40 years old.  Damn she’s been around for a long time.  I remember when she was dealing with Common, before Common got all mainstream and decided he was into really athletic chicks.

On to this cover.  This track “All Night Long” by The Mary Jane Girls is actually from the album “Live”, which is a must get for all you neo-soul lovers out there.  She does a great job adding her unique, soulful vocals to the song.  Mary J. Blige later remixed the song to make it her own.

  • Alicia Keys, Common, and Erykah Badu are just some “Intimate Friends” of Eddie Kendricks

I know I haven’t updated this in a while and I’m home sick so, I thought I’d give you one SUPER update!  This is not really a cover but I am amazed by how many artists have sampled this track by Eddie Kendricks.  The list goes on and on.  I’m sure I’m missing some but I thought I’d give you as many versions as I know.  My favourite is the one by Sweet Sable.  Enjoy!
