Brownstone and Gordon Chambers want to know “If You Love Me”
90’s R&B is all about the beat drop (the point in the song when the drums come in). Almost every good R&B song from the 90s has an amazing beat drop. From “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey to Monica’s “Before You Walk Out of My Life”, the drums not coming in until a little bit into the song makes the song that much better. In the clubs, it gives us a chance to go nuts before actually dancing (this always works when TLC’s “Creep” comes on).
My FAVOURITE breakdown from the 90’s though has to be in the song “If You Love Me” by Brownstone. The vocals and keys in the beginning really set the beat drop up nicely. Now, this cover by Gordon Chambers has the beat drop a little later than the original, but it’s effective nonetheless.
