BBNG brings hip-hop and jazz together like I’ve never heard before. Oh, and they’re from Toronto… no big deal…

Pete Rock, Bilal, and Slum Village “Fall in Love”

I guess I’m on a serious J Dilla tip. But, man this cover is good. It’s actually not really a cover. It’s more of a rendition of Slum Village’s “Fall in Love”. Bilal and Pete Rock do their best to pay tribute to one of the greatest producers of all time. I love the jazzy flow on this track. I wish Toronto could attract artists to come together like this and put on a great show. I can only imagine if I was there. These french people don’t even look like they’re having fun.

J Dilla and Donald Byrd “Think Twice”

Where would you rank J Dilla on your “Top Hip-Hop Producers” list?
For me, he’s #3, behind DJ Premier and Dr. Dre. I pretty much make my list looking at longevity and artists the producer has worked with. No one can really compare to Primo and Dre in those categories. But, Dilla is definitely up there. I love his smooth, relaxing, hip-hop sound. He’s also the perfect producer for girls to love, with tracks like “So Far to Go” or “Fall in Love”.
Another track I really like is “Think Twice” which is a cover of Donald Byrd’s 1972 track of the same name. It’s actually not really a cover, more of a sample, but this is a perfect example of how Jay Dee can make a song his own.

The Smooth Jazz All-stars are “The Next Movement”
I just got something for the
sexsax! When I heard the sax on this beat, I couldn’t help but smile. Nice to hear a jazzy take of this classic Roots track. I could do without the guy on the song though.
